radioactive decay
Radioactive decay occurs in unstable atomic nuclei – that is, ones that don’t have enough binding energy to hold the nucleus together due to an excess of either protons or neutrons.
It comes in three main types – named alpha, beta and gamma for the first three letters of the Greek alphabet. There are also 2 other ways but are not commonly used, they are Positron emission and Electron capture.
